Arrest, Quietly

Rook took Keast's confession the way he took everything: efficiently, the caution half-spoken before the words had landed. Murder, eventually, though the word sat oddly beside the man.

Strand withdrew the Strategy "for review". The register was quietly rewritten in softer language. Marian's audit was appended as a background paper, and the Global Quarter went ahead with its two flagship buildings and its flat whites. The lamps came back on the following month. The railing took a year.

It was accurate, as far as it went. Several people who'd known Marian privately agreed it arrived in a considerably smaller form than the truth she'd been trying to deliver.

The end. Ending 4 of 6: Arrest, Quietly

Sociological note: the culprit caught, the immediate hazard fixed, and the structure that defined problems left almost exactly as it was. A public issue treated as a private crime is a convenient way of ensuring it never has to be treated as a public issue.
