"They invited me as the 'community voice'," said Anisa, with air quotes she'd clearly used before. "I went because the Foundation's been quietly funding my Sunday nights for six years. Anonymous donor, initials E.F."
She pulled out a ledger, dog-eared and coffee-ringed. Monthly payments, paid promptly, never a question.
"Once, he turned up. Flat cap, old anorak, bought a tea, watched the floor for two hours. He said: 'I know what it costs when a room decides where you belong.' Then he left." She looked up. "I saw his photograph on the news last night. That's who it was. Sir Edwin."
