Curtain Call at the Lantern

Midnight. The office. The rain had turned to a steady drizzle that sounded like someone typing very slowly on the window. You pinned photographs to the cork board with Jonah's help and stepped back.

"Structural sociology," you said, "is standing on a satellite. You see borders and roads and systems, and no people. Interactionism is standing on a street corner. You see faces and choices and no bigger picture. Tonight we need both."

"Which one solves murders?" asked Jonah.

"Whichever one you're not using."

Eight faces looked back at you from the cork. Some you'd seen. Some you'd only read about. Every one of them had a role, a role-set, a list of rules they kept and rules they broke, and a reason to be in the Grand Lantern that night. Somewhere in there, someone had broken character.
