Section 22: The Envelope
He went into the vestry and came back with a plain manila envelope. Inside, a typed speech. Six pages. The first line was one you would remember for the rest of your career.
"Ladies and gentlemen, you know Sir Edwin Fairweather. Tonight, I'd like you to meet Eddie Fenn, the boy from Dockside who was made into him."
It went on: the docks, the poverty, the teacher who noticed a clever child with the wrong vowels. And then the woman who took that child in hand and, over a decade, taught him how to sit, speak, hold a fork, choose a wine, laugh at the right moments, and forget where he came from. "She made me," the speech said. "One woman, with a book of manners and a metronome and a will of iron. Dr Helena Crane. I intend tonight to thank her, and to tell you that she, and I, were both performing."
Jonah exhaled slowly. "Crane wrote the script."
"Writing the script isn't the same as killing the actor," you said. But you folded the pages carefully all the same.
Sir Edwin's typed address, left with Reverend Lund. It reveals that he was born Eddie Fenn of Dockside, and that Dr Helena Crane "made" him: taught him a new class identity over a decade. He planned to reveal that "she, and I, were both performing".
