What Halloran Knows

"The council press office put out a statement at twenty past six calling it a tragic accident," said Halloran. "Police had the call at five past. Somebody had the word 'accident' warmed up." He shrugged. "Could be efficiency. It usually is. Roland's office likes to have a line ready for everything."

"Do you know who was on the quay?"

"I know the reception ended at half ten and the festival's insurers have nine different versions of the guest list," said Halloran. "If I ever find a story where everybody told the truth, I'll retire."
