A Voss and Pike Casefile: The Early Days

Problems, Problems

Section 31: Rex Halloran

Rex Halloran

The Sentinel's newsroom smelled of burnt coffee and other people's worst days. Rex Halloran looked up from a layout table with the expression of a man whose phone has finally rung.

"Miss Voss, is it now? I ran the Thorncastle pitch deck. Front page, three days. I've wondered ever since who'd be daft enough to hand me something that good for nothing." He didn't get up. "Sit."

On the screen behind him, tomorrow's page: TRAGEDY ON THE QUAY: HOW SAFE ARE DOCKSIDE'S "PROBLEM STREETS"? Beneath it, a map, streets in red and amber.

"Roland's office feeds me the register every quarter," said Halloran. "Top Ten Problem Streets. It's the best-read thing I print."
