A Voss and Pike Casefile: The First Case
Section 30: What Jonah Knows
"Monday lunchtime, I saw Dr Pryor in the corridor outside the archive, later than he usually came in," said Jonah. "He had Professor Hume's spare office key - the one kept in Priti's drawer for emergencies. I didn't think anything of it till you lot turned up asking questions, because why would I? People borrow keys."
He hesitated, then pulled a battered notebook from his bag. "I kept my own log, separate from the official spreadsheet. Every time I got told something was 'sensitive' and not to write it down properly, I wrote down that I'd been told that, and when. Seemed like the kind of thing somebody should be keeping track of, even if it wasn't my job to."
A parallel record Jonah kept of every moment he was told to omit something from the official Candour data - including, crucially, the exact Monday lunchtime he saw Dr Pryor borrow Hume's spare office key from the department's emergency drawer.
By sitting with him and letting him explain in his own time, you've given Jonah something nobody else this summer has: the assumption that his account is worth hearing properly, before being judged.
