Section 46: The Road Not Taken
"Not tonight, Callum," you said, and hung up. The rain came down, patient as a creditor.
Jonah looked up from the kettle. "That's it? He said Sir Edwin was dead."
"Sir Edwin has a whole police force. I have a headache and a bad feeling about mornings." You pulled the blinds on the window. From up here Saltmarsh was a grid of lights, tidy and indifferent.
The story broke at dawn. By the weekend the Sentinel had a suspect, a boy from Slack Lane named Kieran Doyle, and the city had its verdict. Rook made the arrest with the air of a man not entirely convinced. Nobody came to your door. Nobody ever does, when you've decided to stay in.
Jonah didn't say anything about it, not that week or the next. But every morning at nine he laid the day's paper, folded to the murder, beside your tea.
Sociological note: structure and action. You could choose to walk away, and the social world went on without you. But choices have consequences, and the reader now sees exactly what they cost.
